Florencio Avalos was lifted up over 600 metres in a one man capsule where he was greeted by his family. Avalos was greeted on the surface by his wife and young son, and was hugged by Chilean President Sebastian Pinera. Next to emerge was Mario Sepulveda.
The men have spent 68 days in the hot, humid bowels of a gold and copper mine in Chile's northern Atacama desert after an August 5 collapse. They now face a claustrophobic journey to the surface in the specially-made steel capsule, equipped with oxygen masks and escape hatches in case they get stuck.
