LATEST WORLD NEWS UPDATES:Robert Gates, the US secretary of defense, has said that he intends to leave his post in September 2011. In an interview with the US magazine, Gates said "it would be a mistake to wait until January 2012".
Gates, 66, took office in December 2006 under President George Bush but was kept on the job after Barack Obama assumed the presidency in 2009.
It is pertinent to mention that if Gates stays in office into 2011, he will be the fifth-longest-serving defense secretary in American history.
